I said back in November that [I'd buy an iPhone 16 Pro Max](https://bgr.com/tech/ill-upgrade-to-the-iphone-16-pro-max-if-i-have-to-just-for-the-native-generative-chatgpt-like-experience/) if that's what is needed to get the best possible Apple AI experience on the [iPhone](https://bgr.com/tag/iphone/). Rumors from Korea said at the time that [Siri would get a big upgrade in iOS 18](https://bgr.com/tech/iphone-16-will-reportedly-get-a-huge-siri-overhaul-with-generative-ai/). Siri is expected to become the "ultimate virtual assistant" and the "killer AI app for accessibility across Apple's vast array of devices."

With less than two weeks until WWDC 2024, a new leak echoes those early rumors and details Apple's AI features for [iOS 18](https://bgr.com/guides/ios-18/). [Siri might indeed get an AI overhaul in iOS 18](https://bgr.com/tech/apple-is-reportedly-giving-siri-an-ai-based-overhaul-in-ios-18/). Siri will even let you control apps on the iPhone in ways that aren't possible right now.

The virtual assistant will supposedly let you move files around, send and delete emails, edit photos, share content, and even summarize an article — all by voice. Nothing similar exists on Android, either. But Google will probably do the same thing with a Gemini-powered Assistant on its mobile operating system.

I think [these Siri AI capabilities will do wonders for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro](https://bgr.com/tech/siri-controlling-apps-in-ios-18-is-so-much-bigger-than-the-iphone/). If voice control becomes a thing, multitasking on Apple devices might reach a whole new dimension.

Siri features like these would be enough to warrant an iPhone upgrade this fall. And if a new tidbit from Mark Gurman is accurate, you won't necessarily have to go Pro when you buy an [iPhone 16](https://bgr.com/guides/iphone-16-everything-we-know/) this year.

Apple’s cheapest iPhone 16 might still get the most powerful new AI features

[Apple Vision Pro](https://bgr.com/guides/apple-vision-pro-release-date-price-features/) launched in early February after years of rumors about the company's plans for mixed reality. [Ahead of an international expansion](https://bgr.com/tech/kuo-vision-pro-2-likely-coming-in-2027-as-apple-preps-global-expansion-for-v1/), reliable [analyst Ming-Chi Kuo](https://medium.com/@mingchikuo/apple-cuts-2024-2025-vision-pro-shipment-forecasts-unfavorable-to-mr-headset-pancake-and-micro-38796834f930) confirms what most people already knew: Apple's first spatial computer is a failure.

According to the analyst, Apple has cut 2024 Vision Pro shipments to 400-450k units versus the market consensus of 700-800k units or more. With the company cutting shipments even before expanding internationally, this means Apple has taken a conservative view of demand in non-US markets.

That means Apple might not release a new Apple Vision Pro model in late 2025 after all, and it now expects shipments to decline year-over-year in 2025—even though it planned to expand into several new markets over the coming months.

While the initial concern about Apple Vision Pro sales was Sony's issue with producing enough micro-OLED displays, it seems Apple itself won't need the manufacturer's full capacity after all. In his blog post, Ming-Chi Kuo talks about Apple Vision Pro's biggest issues:

"The challenge for Vision Pro is to address the lack of key applications, price, and headset comfort without sacrificing the see-through user experience. In contrast, VR is also a niche market, but at least there are proven successful applications (games), and trend visibility is better than MR."

While WWDC 2024 could renew interest in Apple Vision Pro thanks to [visionOS 2.0](https://bgr.com/guides/visionos-features-release-date-apple-vision-pro/), it's unclear what key features Apple could add. Several core apps available in other Apple products still aren't available for the spatial computer, and many key developers haven't found a good reason to start developing apps for the platform either.

Apple taking its time to launch the Vision Pro globally also doesn't help, as only the American market has access to this device. Once it expands to more regions, it's possible that more people will be interested in spatial computing, developers will decide to create more apps, and upcoming visionOS updates will bring more quality-of-life features.

Until then, Vision Pro is shaping up to be one of Apple's worst product releases in years.

With [Apple Vision Pro](https://bgr.com/guides/apple-vision-pro-release-date-price-features/) available in the US for over two weeks now, several customers [decided spending $3,500 on this spatial computer](https://bgr.com/tech/heres-why-so-many-apple-fans-say-theyre-returning-the-vision-pro/) was not worth it. Still, almost all of them could probably buy a second generation once Apple unveils it.

So far, we had two types of rumors: One saying Apple was readying a second-generation by 2027 and another that mentioned a possible "Apple Vision" release by 2025. With the first spatial computer by Apple now available, let's revisit the latest rumors – and why Apple Vision Pro 2 could come sooner than later.

[The Elec](https://thelec.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=24943), [Omdia](https://thelec.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=24943), and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo all expect Apple to wait until 2027 to release Vision Pro 2. Although supply chain strains are the most likely reason, the Korean outlet and the research firm believe Apple wants to upgrade the WOLED display to an RGB OLEDoS panel while making it brighter.

In addition, Kuo previously said that Apple was preparing [a cheaper version to release in 2025](https://bgr.com/tech/kuo-apple-vision-pro-lower-shipments-than-expected-cheaper-model-possibly-canceled/). Still, due to the challenges of manufacturing Vision Pro, Cupertino likely canceled these plans to focus on a second generation instead.

Fortunately, _MacRumors_ then shared [new details about Apple Vision Pro 2](https://bgr.com/tech/apple-vision-pro-2-leak-unveils-new-features-and-changes/). According to the publication, this new headset “bears striking resemblance to the first-generation Vision Pro.” It’ll feature the same curved aesthetics and button placement as the original device, but the speaker will have a new home. _MacRumors_ also claims that the device is known internally as Project Alaska and device identifier N109.

Sources say that early designs of the new headset do not include the rounded areas that house the speakers on the current model. Instead, Apple has placed “temples that are flat and uniform throughout their entire length” on the headset.

With that said, the publication believes this device could be ready for a release by the end of 2025 or early 2026, similar to what Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said in his _[Power On newsletter](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-02-18/apple-vision-pro-returning-3-500-device-over-comfort-lack-of-apps-and-price-lsrk88mq?srnd=technology-vp)_ this weekend. He said, "Apple Inc. is probably at least 18 months away from launching a second-generation Vision Pro."

Although he believes this may be a long time for some people to wait, this is a similar timeframe to other Apple products, such as high-end MacBook Pro and [iPad Pro models](https://bgr.com/guides/ipad-pro-2024-release-date-price-specs-m3-processor-oled/). In addition, if Apple lengths this device's release, users could see more benefits when upgrading from one generation to the other.

Apple needs Vision Pro to stay relevant until a second-generation releases

While a second generation might not be enough to address all issues with the first model, the company must improve [visionOS](https://bgr.com/guides/visionos-features-release-date-apple-vision-pro/) to maintain this spatial computer relevant. Besides bug fixes, Apple will need to improve how users interact with a Mac and this device, more immersive experiences, support for more first-party and third-party apps, etc.

Fortunately, visionOS 2.0 will likely be previewed during WWDC 2024, in which Apple will announce several changes and new functions coming to Apple Vision Pro later this year.

Apple Vision Pro 2 could launch sooner than we all expected

When [Apple](http://bgr.com/tag/apple/) refreshed the iPad mini in September 2021, I said the [iPad mini 6 was essentially an iPhone 13 Pro that's begging to be folded](https://bgr.com/tech/ipad-mini-6-is-practically-an-iphone-13-pro-begging-to-be-folded/). The device featured a big redesign, with Apple announcing it alongside the iPhone 13 series. At the time, the iPad mini 6 was the second most powerful iPad in Apple's lineup, rocking the same A15 Bionic chip that Apple used for the iPhone 13 phones.

At the time, Samsung had already launched the Galaxy Z Fold 3, a device that would be about as big as an iPad mini. And sporadic rumors detailed Apple's growing interest in foldables.

More than two years later, we have a fresh report from Korea that says Apple is looking to launch a foldable device in 2026 or 2027. The gadget will seemingly feature a 7-inch to 8-inch foldable display and could be about as big as the iPad mini. It's unclear whether the Apple foldable device might replace the iPad mini, or if it might be part of the [iPhone](https://bgr.com/tag/iphone/) lineup. Apple is reportedly working on an OLED version of the mini as well.


New leak makes Apple’s first foldable sound perfect

A new leak suggests an [iPhone 16 Pro](https://bgr.com/guides/iphone-16-everything-we-know/) with 2TB of storage isn't farfetched from happening. According to a _[DigiTimes](https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20240115PD231.html)_ report, Apple is considering adding Quad-Level Cell (QLC) NAND flash memory in large-capacity 1TB iPhone models.

With that, the company would use the Triple-Level Cell (TLC) NAND flash for lower storage, such as 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB, while higher storage (1TB and possibly 2TB) would use this other technology.

The benefit of QCL is reducing production costs by offering more storage in less space. However, adopting this technology means Apple would offer slower data write speeds than those at a lower capacity. With that, an iPhone 15 Pro Max with 1TB would have faster writing/reading speeds than the iPhone 16 Pro with 1TB of storage, for example.

In addition, the QLC NAND Flash is less reliable than TLC as it has reduced endurance for writing data since it can store more information in less space.

Although this might sound like a downgrade, you shouldn't worry that much. The performance difference is little. For example, the QLC flash storage offers write speeds of 550MB/s, while the TLC option can hit between 450MB/s and 500MB/s.

This difference would be more evident in a workstation computer as it would be concerning in editing videos, programming, etc., but not on a smartphone. With this change, Apple could offer a cheaper 1TB and even a higher-storage version without burdening the user with a $2,000 iPhone.

Despite that, rumors about the iPhone 16 Pro highlight the future larger display, 48MP ultra-wide lens, better battery, and an improved A18 Pro chip, likely to heat less with a better overall performance.

The iPhone 16 Pro is still several months ahead of us. We expect to learn more about its future capabilities when Apple announces iOS 18 during the WWDC. Reports say AI features will be the focus of this year's Worldwide Developers Conference.


iPhone 16 Pro 2TB could be cheaper than expected, but there’s a catch

LG is one of the most beloved brands when it comes to televisions. The company's OLED lineup is top tier and many believe it to be the best-looking OLED on the market today. Personally, I lean towards the look of the Sony OLEDs and own one of those, but I can really appreciate the look of the LG as well. My friend has a 77-inch G-Series and it looks absolutely incredible.

While the company certainly made a name for itself with its OLED TVs, it also is pushing the forefront of picture technology with its Mini LED lineup. Today, LG [announced](https://www.lgnewsroom.com/2023/12/lg-introduces-2024-qned-tvs-with-enhanced-picture-quality-and-extensive-screen-choices/) in a press release that is will be debuting its 2024 lineup of Mini LED televisions — which it calls QNED — at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January.

I've been telling you that I plan to get the Vision Pro ever since [Apple](http://bgr.com/tag/apple/) unveiled the spatial computer back in June. But I've had to change my expectations in recent months. Reports said that [Apple will start selling the Vision Pro in the US by March](https://bgr.com/tech/vision-pro-rumored-for-march-release-and-thats-bad-news-for-international-buyers-like-me/). An international rollout will then take several months, with buyers in other countries looking at a late 2024 release.

Apple reportedly wants to give each buyer a custom device, which means you'll have to get an appointment at a retail store to get yours. That's certainly great news for the overall [Vision Pro](https://bgr.com/tag/vision-pro/) experience. But it means I might not get my Vision Pro until at some point in 2025, when Europe finally gets it.

While I'm speculating here, the closer we get to 2025, the more likely it would be for me to wait for the Vision Pro 2 or the cheaper model. Those spatial computers might be here by then, so getting the original model might not make sense.

The newest Vision Pro development indicates that Apple will start Vision Pro training in mid-January at its retail stores. That timeframe is exciting because Apple could release the Vision Pro soon after that in the US. But even so, it's not good news to me as long as we don't have a release date for the gadget.

Apple's plans to use its own 5G modem on a future iPhone model might have been scrapped for good. After a few reports saying the company was postponing the release of its 5G modem due to development issues, it seems Cupertino is entirely giving it all up for now.

According to Korean blog Naver user [yeux1122](https://m.blog.naver.com/PostView.naver?blogId=yeux1122&logNo=223278322589&navType=by), with X user [Tech\_Reve](https://twitter.com/Tech_Reve/status/1729825488380588433) corroborating, a company's source told them that Apple has entered the phase of "reorganizing its ongoing investment in its own 5G modem development department" as the idea of bringing this technology to the iPhone SE 4 "appear to have failed and are expected to be completely eliminated."

While it's unclear if that means Apple will only phase out the development of its 5G modem for the iPhone SE 4 or entirely, we still have to see.

Previously, _[Bloomberg](https://bgr.com/tech/postponing-apples-5g-modem-is-vital-to-avoid-a-repeat-of-the-2012-maps-fiasco/?)_ reported that Apple aimed to release its 5G modem as soon as the end of 2025 or early 2026. Before that, the company thought it could release the first iteration by the spring of 2025.

The publication said, "Thousands of employees have worked on the project since 2018, and still, Apple remains years away from cracking the problem.” The main issue is that Cupertino needs to “seamlessly link up with hundreds of carriers around the world, working across varied environments and conditions,” which Qualcomm has been doing for years now.

Originally, Apple planned to introduce its first 5G modem with an iPhone in 2024, most likely the [iPhone SE 4](https://bgr.com/tech/the-exciting-iphone-se-4-redesign-might-not-hit-stores-until-2025/). This version wouldn’t feature the modern mmWave technology, as it’s more complex to develop, and it also represents lower sales than the company’s high-end iPhones.

But a day before Apple introduced the [iPhone 15 models](https://bgr.com/guides/iphone-15-everything-we-know-so-far/), Qualcomm announced it would partner with Cupertino for at least 2026 to offer the company its 5G modems.

Apple’s ultimate goal is to offer an [all-in-one chip](https://bgr.com/tech/apple-developing-its-own-bluetooth-and-wi-fi-chip-custom-5g-modem-for-iphone-in-the-works/) that would handle cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivities, but the company is also struggling with this project.

According to most reports out there, [Samsung will launch the Galaxy S24 series in mid-January](https://bgr.com/tech/galaxy-s24-ai-phone-is-reportedly-coming-in-mid-january/). Moving up the next-gen Galaxy S's release is one way for [Samsung](https://bgr.com/tag/samsung/) to potentially improve its financial results. Profits from the mobile division continue to make up for lower chip sales.

Samsung also needs an earlier Galaxy S24 launch to better compete against the iPhone 15 series, especially considering reports that indicate Apple's newest iPhones are selling very well in Samsung's home market of [South Korea](https://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20231122000644).

That's why we're already getting so many leaks detailing the novelties Samsung has prepared for the regular Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Built-in personal AI features might be among the main selling points of the new phones, as will the undoubtedly improved cameras.

But the Galaxy S24 design might also convince more buyers to spend more money on a Samsung flagship. As you're about to see, the Galaxy S24 Ultra might feature a big redesign with a flat display. This is a feature that many people have been asking for.

Apple surprised users with the [Apple Watch Ultra 2](https://bgr.com/tech/apple-watch-ultra-2-first-impressions-a-brighter-future-for-siri/) this year. The launch came just one year after releasing the first iteration of this line. But Apple might not unveil a third-generation Ultra model in 2024. According to [analyst Ming-Chi Kuo](https://medium.com/@mingchikuo/apple%E5%9C%A82024%E5%B9%B4%E6%9B%B4%E6%96%B0%E6%96%B0%E6%AC%BEapple-watch-ultra%E7%9A%84%E5%8F%AF%E8%83%BD%E6%80%A7%E6%AD%A3%E9%80%90%E6%BC%B8%E9%99%8D%E4%BD%8E-the-likelihood-of-apple-updating-the-new-apple-watch-680ba677e864), Cupertino is running behind on its product development schedule, so it might not be able to develop enough new features in time for a meaningful upgrade next year.

Per Kuo's projections, if Apple doesn't kick off Apple Watch Ultra 3 development by December, it would be "almost confirmed" that the company won't release a new Apple Watch Ultra in 2024.

One of the reasons why Apple might scrap a third generation so soon is due to the lack of innovative health features, ensuring the manufacturability of new features, and "addressing issues related to microLED production."

If that's the case, the shipments of Apple Watch Ultra are expected to decline by 20-30% YoY in 2024, and the total Apple Watch shipments would drop by 10% YoY next year to about 35 million units.

Interestingly, some rumors say Apple is preparing an [Apple Watch (Series) X](https://bgr.com/tech/apple-watch-series-x-and-apple-watch-se-3-might-feature-larger-displays-in-2024/) for 2024 to mark the tenth anniversary of this wearable. So far, it's expected that Cupertino will unveil an all-new design, although it's likely that Apple won't add new health features or sensors, as they need a few more years of development. The blood glucose feature, for example, will likely take another two to three years if everything goes right.

If that's the case, maybe the company wants to keep the Apple Watch X spotlight and wait for the [microLED Apple Watch Ultra](https://bgr.com/tech/microled-apple-watch-ultra-pushed-to-2026-delaying-the-first-microled-iphone-even-further/), which has been heavily rumored during this year and could launch starting in 2025.

With this year's release, Apple improved the processor of the Apple Watch by making it faster for AI features and adding a second-generation ultrawideband chip. _BGR_ will keep reporting on upcoming features for a future watch.

Apple might be working on its full-scale [augmented reality](https://bgr.com/tag/augmented-reality/) headset, [Apple Vision Pro](https://bgr.com/tag/apple-vision-pro/), but some companies are content to try to master the AR field with smaller-scale options. Enter Xreal Air 2, the second generation of Xreal’s AR glasses, which first debuted in 2021 as [Nreal Air](https://bgr.com/reviews/nreal-air-smart-glasses-review-a-lightweight-augmented-reality-experience/). The company launched the glasses in China last month, but now they’re available to preorder in Europe and the U.S.

The Xreal Air 2 glasses will offer improved displays and a more comfortable setup, the company says. Additionally, the company has launched the Xreal Air 2 Pro, which offers electrochromic dimming, allowing you to change the level of immersion from zero to 100 percent. The glasses work by expanding whatever you’re viewing to a big screen that can reach up to 330 inches.

The new Xreal Air 2 will use Sony’s newest 0.55-inch Micro-OLED display. It’ll display a full resolution of 1920 x 1080 per eye and offer a refresh rate up to 120Hz. It also sports 500 nits of brightness, compared to the original Air glasses, which only offered up to 400 nits. The new glasses are also 10 percent thinner than the original and up to 10 percent lighter.

One way that Xreal has continued to improve the comfort of its glasses is by adding improved elastic temples and a new set of “AirFit” nose pads. The glasses also feature softer materials overall, allowing for more comfort during longer usage sessions. The glasses can also connect via USB-C with video output, but there’s no wireless option, so you’ll also be tethered to whatever device you’re connected to.

Xreal says it also improved its speaker system by incorporating wrap-around spatial audio that uses an open-ear design targeted at the wearer. The new glasses honestly sound like a solid upgrade from the original, aside from the fact that there isn’t any wireless connection option. The Xreal Air 2 is [listed at $399](https://us.shop.xreal.com/products/xreal-air-2), while the Air 2 Pro will retail for $449.

The [iPhone 15](https://bgr.com/tech/iphone-15-everything-we-know-so-far/) launch hasn't gone very smoothly for [Apple](http://bgr.com/tag/apple/). Some of the buyers who got the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max versions experienced overheating problems that Apple had to fix via a software update. The iOS 17.0.3 release addressed a few of the bugs that led to overheating, though [some iPhone 15 Pro users still experienced issues](https://bgr.com/tech/iphone-15-pro-overheating-complaints-appear-after-ios-17-0-3-update/) after the fix.

But overheating isn't the only problem that Apple needs to fix. Some buyers have reported [sound issues that impacted various iPhone 15 models](https://bgr.com/tech/iphone-15-might-have-a-speaker-issue-that-needs-fixing/).

More troublingly, [some iPhone 15 Pro Max users complained of an OLED burn-in issue](https://bgr.com/tech/some-iphone-15-pro-max-users-are-having-serious-problems-with-display-burn-in/), which is a disturbing issue for a new phone that could indicate actual defects with the hardware. However, yet another software bug appears to be causing the problem, and Apple will fix it with its iOS 17.1 update.

With the [Apple Watch Series 9](https://bgr.com/guides/apple-watch-series-9-release-date-price-specs/) and Apple Watch Ultra 2, Apple is really pushing how dim its display can be. Besides both screens being brighter, 2,000 nits and 3,000 nits, respectively, Cupertino also claims they can get as low as one nit for dark environments, such as when you wake up or when you're in a darker environment.

Although it seems like a significant improvement, several reports on Reddit and Apple Community complain that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 ambient light sensor is not behaving as it should (via _[MacRumors](https://www.macrumors.com/))_. One [Reddit user](https://www.reddit.com/r/AppleWatch/comments/16sfez8/ambient_light_sensor_behavior_is_this_expected/) wrote about this weird behavior:

1.  I started off in a lit room, then turned the lights off. The watch stayed super bright in its AOD mode. Only when I woke the screen and put it back to AOD did it go into AOD mode with the correct brightness (which is supposed to be super dim cause I turned the lights off).
2.  Then I started out in a super dim room, turned the lights on, and the screen did not adjust until after I woke the display. So before I woke the display, it was so dim while in a lit room that I couldn’t do anything.

Then, another user shared [a similar issue](https://www.reddit.com/r/AppleWatch/comments/16rbcj8/apple_watch_ultra_2_inconsistent_display_issues/). They say that raise to wake works, but 50% of the time, the display dims back, and it stays entirely on when it shouldn't. In addition, auto brightness is "wonky" sometimes.

In [Apple Community](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255146215?page=7), a user wonders why Apple doesn't let people disable auto dim:

> Why can I not disable this auto dim or at least raise the lower minimum brightness. This is a disaster, as I can hardly read the watch in my office and living room where we have low light usually. This is almost a RETURN ISSUE for me?

Interestingly, this is not the only software issue regarding the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. _BGR_ has been reporting problems with [watch complications](https://bgr.com/tech/watchos-10-0-2-still-doesnt-fix-weather-complications-so-apple-suggested-two-other-solutions/) not working as intended with [watchOS 10](https://bgr.com/guides/watchos-10/).

Apple already said it's working on a fix, but it's not here yet. In addition, the company finally addressed overheating issues with the iPhone 15 Pro models. Not only does Cupertino say it needs to release a software update, but that some apps are also responsible for overheating the newer iPhones.

Thankfully, the company might not need to lower the A17 Pro's power due to this issue, as some users feared Apple might have to.
