Nintendo has thrown Switch players a long-awaited bone alongside announcing its [end-of-year financials results](https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/index.html), confirming the console’s successor will be unveiled before April, 2025. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said that a next-generation Nintendo Switch console will be announced “within this fiscal year” — giving the Japanese gaming giant a deadline of March 31st, 2025. I played Game Boy Advance games on my iPhone last night thanks to a new emulator called iGBA, which appears to be the first Game Boy Advance emulator on the App Store since Apple started [allowing emulators](https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/5/24122341/apple-app-store-game-emulators-super-apps) worldwide. The only trouble is, it doesn’t look like iGBA is developer Mattia La Spina’s own work. Something seemingly confirmed by Apple after it pulled the app for violating its copyright and spam rules, [according to _MacRumors_](https://www.macrumors.com/2024/04/15/apple-removes-igba-from-app-store/).

Rakuten Kobo is launching its first color e-readers, the Kobo Libra Colour and the Kobo Clara Colour. Both use E Ink’s latest Kaleido color screen technology, which has subtle, pastel-like hues and drops from a 300ppi grayscale resolution to 150ppi when you view content in color.

I’ll be testing both e-readers soon, but so far, they look like small upgrades to Kobo’s existing e-readers. That’s not a bad thing, though! Can you watch a solar eclipse in the Apple Vision Pro?

Meta will bring AI to its Ray-Ban smart glasses starting next month, according to [a report from _The New York Times_](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/28/technology/personaltech/smart-glasses-ray-ban-meta.html?partner=slack&smid=sl-share). The multimodal AI features, which can perform translation, along with object, animal, and monument identification, [have been in early access](https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/12/23998780/ray-ban-smart-glasses-hey-meta-multimodal-ai-features) since last December.

Users can activate the glasses’ smart assistant by saying “Hey Meta,” and then saying a prompt or asking a question. It will then respond through the speakers built into the frames. The _NYT_ offers a glimpse at how well Meta’s AI works when taking the glasses for a spin in a grocery store, while driving, at museums, and even at the zoo.

Nikon is acquiring RED, the company founded by Jim Jannard (founder of Oakley) and best known for digital cinema cameras including the RED One 4K and V-Raptor X. Exact terms of the deal were not disclosed [in Nikon’s press release](https://www.nikon.com/company/news/2024/0307_01.html), which outlined how RED will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the camera company.

Nikon hopes to use the deal to expand into the professional digital cinema camera market, drawing from RED’s “knowledge in cinema cameras, including unique image compression technology and color science.” RED currently has around 220 employees, per Nikon’s press release, and has its headquarters in Foothill Ranch, California.

Sony has started testing a [new PS5 beta update](https://blog.playstation.com/2024/02/06/ps5-beta-adds-dualsense-controller-sound-enhancements-and-share-screen-interactions/?sf271633644=1) that will improve the speakers and microphone on the DualSense controller, alongside adding pointers and emoji reactions to the Share Screen feature. The update is available to testers today via an email invite, and it also includes the ability to dim the brightness of the PS5 power indicator.

The firmware for both the DualSense and DualSense Edge wireless controllers has been updated with this PS5 beta to improve the volume of the speakers that output in-game sounds and voice chat. One of the most impressive parts of Samsung’s new Galaxy S24 Ultra is the anti-glare display, which is made of [Corning Gorilla Armor glass](https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/17/24041838/samsung-galaxy-s24-ultra-scratch-resistance-corning-gorilla-armor) that [Samsung touts](https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-galaxy-s24-ultra-creates-new-standards-of-durability-and-visual-clarity-with-corning-gorilla-armor) as its “most scratch-resistant yet.” Although it’s easy to dismiss that claim as marketing speak, [a new durability test from JerryRigEverything](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyxcO2vdcCg&t=308s) proves Samsung really isn’t exaggerating after all.

During his video, JerryRightEverything tests the S24 Ultra’s durability by scratching the screen with different picks according to Mohs hardness scale — ranging from the softest materials at level one and the hardest at level 10. The YouTuber’s pick only started leaving scratches at level seven, but it didn’t create grooves in the glass that typically start appearing at that level.

The first non-Valve device with SteamOS preinstalled is about to ship: Ayaneo just announced its next handheld gaming PC, the Next Lite, is running the open-source operating system.

Ayaneo is pitching the Next Lite as a cost-effective option, but we don’t know too much about the device just yet or how much it will cost. It has a seven-inch 800p screen, a 47Wh battery, and Hall effect joysticks, according to [an Ayaneo blog post](https://www.ayaneo.com/article/806). The company is also advertising “vibrant colors” that include a good-looking seafoam green and “high-end craftsmanship.”

But we don’t yet know what chip powers the handheld, so it’s hard to know how its performance might stack up against other devices.
