The Surface Pro 8, Surface Go 3, and upgraded Surface Pro X

Microsoft

Microsoft’s hotly-anticipated Surface product event took place on Wednesday, and we have tons of information to share. The company topped off the event by debuting a fancy new Surface Laptop Studio, a unique Surface Duo 2 folding phone, and more.

Here’s everything Microsoft announced at its September 22nd, 2021 event, what you need to know, and when you can order new products.

Surface Laptop Studio 2-in-1

Surface Laptop Studio hinge

Microsoft

First up is Microsoft’s new flagship 2-in-1 laptop, the Surface Laptop Studio. This year, it completely changes the game with a unique new design compared to traditional devices. The Studio still folds flat and does all the things we’ve come to expect from a 2-in-1, but now it features a unique floating mode where you can perch the screen upwards and behind its trackpad for immersive gaming or streaming experiences.

We also really like the new “Studio” mode, where the display lays flat against its keyboard and trackpad for a tablet experience instead of folding around back. It’s an exciting and sleek alternative to others on the market.

This new Laptop Studio is Microsoft’s most powerful Surface device to date and comes in several different configurations. Including support for 11th Gen Intel Core processors, NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs, and more to run Pro-level software, the top AAA games, and much more.

The Surface Laptop Studio features a 14.4-inch PixelSense display that’s super slim despite the integrated hinge, but the overall package does come in over 4lbs, so it’s certainly not lightweight. There’s also a magnetic storage and charging slot for the new Surface Slim Pen 2 for those who want a stylus experience.

The Surface Laptop Studio starts at $1,600 and is available for pre-order at Microsoft’s website.

The new Surface Laptop Studio features a bizarre floating display for three immersive orientations. It’s also the most powerful Surface device yet, running 11th Gen Intel Core processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs. Pre-order it now starting at $1,600.

Surface Duo 2 Folding Phone

Surface Duo 2 phone

Microsoft

Microsoft’s take on the folding phone is back and better than ever. Of course, we’re talking about the newly improved Surface Duo 2, which now has a third display — just not where you’d expect.

The Surface Duo 2 is still the same concept as the original. A folding device with two displays joined by a sturdy hinge, instead of one big display that’s made of plastic and bends like the Galaxy Z Fold. In theory, that should make it more durable than true foldables. This year, we’re getting a bigger 8.3-inch 90Hz display instead of only 8.1-inches on the original.

Perhaps the biggest change, though, is the third screen so you can see the time, date, battery status, and incoming notifications without opening your device. There’s no huge third screen, and instead, Microsoft added a small strip screen to the hinge on the side.

This new folding phone fixes most of the shortcomings of the original. The Surface Duo 2 comes with 5G, NFC, 8GBs of RAM, and a Snapdragon 888 processor. It’ll launch with Android 11 and hopefully see a swift update to Android 12 soon. Buyers will also enjoy a new triple camera setup, ToF sensor, a larger battery, more significant storage options, and you can even get an optional 23W fast charger or the Slim Pen 2 to round it out.

The Surface Duo 2 comes in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options, and the price starts at $1,599, which is $100 more than the original. In addition, you can pre-order it in two colors, Glacier and Obsidian, starting today from Microsoft.

Now with NFC, 5G, better cameras, a decent processor, and fast charging.

Surface Pro, Surface X, Surface Go

Microsoft

Microsoft’s famous Surface Tablet line is getting a huge revamp, too. At first glance, the new Surface Pro 8 looks very similar to its predecessors, but a lot changed. Yes, it still uses the same tried and true design, but it’s all about the ports, specs, and what’s on the inside.

The new Surface Pro 8 ditches USB-A in favor of two USB-C Thunderbolt ports. Finally! That means they can handle high-speed data transfer, monitors, along with all your favorite accessories. The ports aren’t the only thing that’s faster, either. The Pro 8 is over two times faster than last year’s model, thanks to new Intel 11th Gen processors in i5 or i7 configurations.

Microsoft

Along with 11th gen chips, users can choose anywhere from 8GB to 32GB of RAM, tons of storage starting at 128GB and ending above 1TB, and the SSD drives are user-replaceable too.

The Surface Pro 8 also works with the new Surface Slim Pen 2, and it offers an optional keyboard that can house and charge it, similar to the Pro X. You can pre-order the Surface Pro 8 today, and the price starts at $1,099.99.

Additionally, Microsoft debuted a new Surface Pro X, which as we all know, replaced the struggling Surface RT a while back. And while nothing drastically changed with the Surface Pro X this year, it does come in a more affordable Wi-Fi variant now.

That’s about the only difference, and like the earlier LTE model, it comes in multiple RAM (8 or 16 GB) and storage (128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB) configurations. The new Wi-Fi-only models are on pre-order today, starting at $899.99.

Last but not least, Microsoft’s Surface Go received a minor update to deliver more power, but that’s about it. The new Surface Go 3 comes with newer Intel Pentium processor options and even an Intel i3 variant. That’s a bit exciting, as now you’ll have more power in a small, affordable, portable device. However, everything else about the Surface Go remains the same.

You can pre-order the Surface Go 3 today, and the price starts at $399.99.

Surface Accessories

Microsoft Surface Adaptive Kit for Accessibility

Microsoft

During the 2021 Surface event, Microsoft announced several exciting new products. And while there aren’t many new accessories or TypeCover keyboards, the accessories they did announce are pretty awesome. That said, out of everything, it’s the new Adaptive Kit that stood out.

In simple terms, the Adaptive Kit is a set of textured stickers, labels, and tabs designed to improve accessibility for everyone. There are keycap stickers to help those with poor eyesight to get alignment on a keyboard, stickers to designate ports and even tabs you can install on your Surface Laptop that’ll make it easier to open one-handed.

Being able to recognize a cable instantly, and more importantly, which port to plug it into is a big deal for many. This ingenious accessory is something everyone can appreciate.

We’re also getting a powerful and capable new Surface Slim Pen 2. This latest stylus is designed with comfortability, accuracy, and easy charging in mind. So whether that’s charging in your Surface Pro 8 keyboard cover or magnetically attached to the side of the Surface Duo 2, it’ll always be ready with 15-hour battery life.

Microsoft

The Slim Pen 2 has a built-in haptic motor that delivers the same feeling you get when you’re using a pen or paintbrush against a sheet of paper, which Microsoft calls tactile signals. And while this is a small thing, like the Adaptive kit, it just makes sense. Additionally, the updated design and sharper tip give you pinpoint accuracy, plus it’s easier to hold and has better pressure sensitivity.

Users will also enjoy the adjustable side and top buttons — including a quick erase function with a single tap. Those that enjoy using a Surface Pen will really love the improved experience on the Slim Pen 2 for drawing, jotting down notes, and more. Get yours for $129 when it’s available starting October 5th.

Last but not least, Microsoft also took the time to reveal a new computer mouse made from recycled plastic. They’re calling it the Microsoft Ocean Plastic Mouse.

Microsoft Ocean Plastic Mouse from recycled plastic

Microsoft

The Microsoft Ocean Plastic Mouse design uses 20% recycled plastic removed from the ocean. It’s a respectable project, you have to admit. Better yet, the box is 100% recyclable. It’s also small, lightweight, efficient, and promises roughly 12-months of battery life from one AA battery.

Microsoft is working with a team to recover plastic and waste from the ocean and Earth’s waterways, then they clean and process it and turn it into products like this mouse. Additionally, in select markets, Microsoft will provide users with a free mail-in label to recycle old products like a mouse, which is then recycled through contracted partners.

The new Ocean Mouse is only $24.99 and is available to order today.
