You don’t even need to buy a new Pi Pico W to enable Bluetooth. Just install the [1.5.1 C SDK](https://github.com/raspberrypi/pico-sdk/releases/tag/1.5.1) and read through the Pi Foundation’s [documentation](https://github.com/bluekitchen/btstack#supported-protocols-and-profiles) to get started.

Raspberry Pi Pico W is an affordable microcontroller with Wi-Fi (and now Bluetooth) connectivity. It’s mainly intended for IOT devices, though you can use it for a [variety of creative projects](https://www.reviewgeek.com/112687/great-raspberry-pi-pico-projects/). The addition of Bluetooth will allow you to stream audio from Pi Pico W, though it’ll also let you connect small wireless accessories, such as keyboards or custom controllers.

This may sound a bit odd, but the Pi Pico W’s hardware was always capable of supporting Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth LE. Its firmware simply didn’t support Bluetooth functionality (until now, of course).

If you want to add Bluetooth functionality to your Pi Pico, install the [1.5.1 C SDK](https://github.com/raspberrypi/pico-sdk/releases/tag/1.5.1) firmware. Logitech Debuts Its First MX Keyboard and Mouse Combo

A company called Hylium Industries has claimed a significant breakthrough in drone technology, according to a [report by _Hackaday_](https://hackaday.com/2023/05/18/drone-flies-for-five-hours-with-hydrogen-fuel-cell/). The company recently uploaded a YouTube video featuring a hydrogen-powered drone that boasts a flight time of up to five hours—a huge leap over current battery-powered drones.

The video features the HyliumX, which uses a hydrogen fuel cell to generate electricity for its motors and other electronic systems. Hydrogen cells’ big advantage over the commonly-used lithium batteries is their higher energy density, which allows the HyliumX to achieve a much longer flight time. While the video reveals almost no details about the drone’s inner workings, it is noteworthy that Hylium went beyond making a mere tech demonstrator and incorporated practical features into the drone’s design.

In addition to its long flight time, the HyliumX refuels very quickly—just five minutes, according to the video. This quick turnaround enables it to perform continuously with minimal interruption, making it an appealing option for [drone operators](https://www.howtogeek.com/796188/should-i-buy-a-drone/). The HyliumX also comes equipped with a night vision camera and the ability to transmit video over distances of up to 10 kilometers—making it an appealing choice for surveillance and inspection operations. However, we should note that some of the promotional video showcasing these capabilities appears to be stock footage, according to _Hackaday_.

The video also claims that the HyliumX’s liquid hydrogen canister is drop-safe, meaning accidental drops while the [drone is flying](https://www.howtogeek.com/757055/how-do-drones-actually-fly/) won’t result in a catastrophic explosion or other negative consequences. In the video, the company demonstrates dropping a hydrogen canister near an active motorway, with no apparent adverse outcomes observed. Although, when one watches the video, it raises the question if the demonstration was safe and responsible.

Keep in mind that Hylium Industries isn’t a well-known company. Its YouTube channel only has 320 subscribers as of this writing, and the video featuring the HyliumX has a mere 4,000 views. Additionally, this video has been live for about four months, and it hasn’t got much attention in the press. It’s also worth pointing out that the QR code featured in the video points to an unsecured website, so visit at your own risk.

Nevertheless, if the HyliumX is a legitimate product, it represents a significant breakthrough in hydrogen cell and drone technology that warrants attention.

Facebook Messenger is leaving Apple Watch on May 31st, according to several social media posts. While the app will disappear, users will still get notifications to their smartwatch when they receive messages through Messenger, states the screen-captured notification from Facebook posted to Twitter.

However, the message didn’t appear to go out to many people. Chatter about the impending end of Messenger on Apple Watch is limited to just a handful of Tweets, with just a couple of users providing [visual receipts](https://twitter.com/TroRolz/status/1656115599846813696) of the [notifications they received](https://twitter.com/TechTickles/status/1655980502363275272) on their devices informing them of the social media giant’s decision to withdraw from the smartwatch.

Other posters [bemoaned](https://twitter.com/ThaFix/status/1655985267331805184?s=20) the [Apple Watch leaving](https://twitter.com/GhostFaceTrevor/status/1656020119804432384?s=20) the smartwatch but [did not provide screenshots](https://twitter.com/imzebabey/status/1656116363662860290?s=20). For what it’s worth, the _Review Geek_ staff have not encountered this notification on their Apple Watches. We’ve reached out to Facebook for clarification and comment.

As of this writing, Facebook has not released any information to the general public about its decision to remove Messenger from the Apple Watch. So, it remains unclear why it would do this. However, some posters on Facebook speculate it could be because allowing users to respond to Messages via the smartwatch app reduced the number of minutes spent in the mobile app and website, [_PiunikaWeb_](https://piunikaweb.com/2023/05/10/fb-messenger-app-will-be-no-longer-available-on-apple/) reports.

At a glance, the [Nothing Phone 1](https://www.reviewgeek.com/125637/nothing-phone-1-review-a-surprisingly-good-phone-with-a-party-trick/) may seem a bit gimmicky—it lights up, it’s got a weird name, and so on. But the Phone 1 is a solid device with a very appealing price tag. Now, Nothing is gearing up to launch its second smartphone, the creatively-named Nothing Phone 2.

The news here is pretty straightforward. Nothing says that the Phone 2 will launch in “summer 2023” and confirms that a U.S. launch will occur at some point (possibly after the U.K. and Europe launch). The Phone 1 never got an official U.S. release (though it got plenty of coverage in North America), so we’re happy to see Nothing come to its senses.

It’s really just an illustration of some white hardware with a red blinking light (maybe a notification LED). The original Nothing Phone has a bunch of [integrated lights](https://www.reviewgeek.com/125637/nothing-phone-1-review-a-surprisingly-good-phone-with-a-party-trick/), so it’s safe to assume that the Phone 2 will create a light show of its own.

An exact launch date for the Nothing Phone 2 is unknown. Nothing’s Second Smartphone Will Light Up the Summer

Fairphone is the leading repairable smartphone brand; it regularly receives [praise from iFixit](https://www.reviewgeek.com/104390/fairphone-4-sets-a-new-standard-for-repairability-in-ifixit-teardown/), and its [extended software support](https://www.reviewgeek.com/142111/the-fairphone-2-is-about-to-receive-its-final-update/) puts brands like Google and Samsung to shame. Now, [_Android Authority_](https://www.androidauthority.com/fairphone-fairbuds-xl-headphones-3313580/) has discovered that Fairphone is working on a pair of wireless headphones.

This is a pretty exciting discovery. As _Android Authority_ notes, a [Bluetooth SIG listing](https://launchstudio.bluetooth.com/ListingDetails/168438) for the “FairBuds XL” appeared on April 13th. And a quick Google Search for “FairBuds XL” reveals a preview for a [Vimeo video](https://redirect.viglink.com/?key=14d03d76e0a6285761e58439513dfd19&u=https%3A%2F%2Fvimeo.com%2F814251710&cuid=xid:{xid}&___trxnet=vg), which was uploaded toward the beginning of April. (This video is set to private. Or, it may have been removed. In any case, you can’t watch it.)

From what we can tell, the FairBuds XL utilize Bluetooth 5.0 and feature a speckled green paint job, similar to a popular [Fairphone 4](https://shop.fairphone.com/en/buy-fairphone-4) colorway. The headphones have two large buttons, presumably to control volume and power. We can’t find any details about battery life, noise cancelation, and so on.

One might assume that their FairBuds XL are repairable. After all, they’re made by Fairphone! But this isn’t Fairphone’s first attempt at an audio product. The company previously launched a set of [wireless earbuds](https://shop.fairphone.com/en/true-wireless-stereo-earbuds), which scored a stunningly low repairability score in [iFixit’s teardown](https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Fairphone+True+Wireless+Earbuds+Teardown/146449). (Notably, these earbuds are called “True Wireless Earbuds,” not “FairBuds.” I’m not sure why the upcoming headphones are called “FairBuds XL.”)

I should also note that the Fairphone 4 doesn’t have a headphone jack. Naturally, a lot of Fairphone enthusiasts complain about this omission, so I’m curious to see how they’ll respond to the FairBuds XL.

Our friends at _Android Authority_ managed to find a [Swiss listing](https://archive.is/c5LR1) for the headphones, which set the MSRP at 235.35 Swiss Francs (about $260). But this price may be a placeholder, so I wouldn’t take it to heart.

The FBI is warning the public against using publicly available USB charging stations to power up their devices. The tweet also recommends carrying your own charging cable and connecting your devices through an electrical outlet rather than a USB charging hub.

Public charging stations for mobile devices have become commonplace in places like malls, airports, and hotels in recent years. And are a battery life-saver for users running low on power on their smartphones, laptops, and more. However, many people don’t realize that data can be transferred through electrical currents, opening their devices to malware threats such as viruses and spyware. With this new warning from the FBI, the public should treat public charging with the same skepticism they view publicly available Wi-Fi.

The [Denver Post reports](https://www.denverpost.com/2023/04/06/fbi-denver-warning-dont-use-free-public-phone-charging-stations/) that the Denver International Airport is aware of the practice, known as “Juice Jacking,” but isn’t aware of any specific incidents happening at its facility.

DIA spokesperson Ashley Forest stated that the facility “has methods of determining whether a public charging port has been tampered with and the ability to take any tampered port out of service.” But went on to say, “the best defense against this type of attack on any public charging port remains within the smartphone itself,” and that Apple and Android phones provide updates to devices that “alert users to this type of attack when using a public charging port,” according to the Post.

After a long wait, Google Fi now offers 5G coverage for the iPhone. It’s a very overdue feature, but still, it’s a welcome change for iPhone users on Google Fi.

This change requires the [iOS 16.4](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213676) update and a 5G-compatible iPhone. If you own the iPhone 12 or a later device, you’re good. The third-generation iPhone SE is also 5G-compatible, though previous modes of SE are not.

Additionally, you may need to enable Google Fi 5G coverage from your iPhone’s Settings—open Settings, go to “Cellular,” select “Cellular Data Options,” tap “Voice & Data,” select your Google Fi Number, and navigate to “Voice & Data.”

It took Google Fi a full three years to launch 5G support for iOS, and we’re not really sure why. Rival MVNOs began offering 5G support for iOS back in 2020 and 2021. But hey, maybe Google can get around to supporting visual voicemail on iOS (instead of directing customers to the Fi voicemail system).

The first Matter-enabled Nanoleaf products are now available for pre-order. That said, these products are pretty low-key—an [Essentials A19 full-color smart bulb](https://nanoleaf.me/en-US/products/essentials/bulbs/?category=A19-E26&standard=matter&size=each) and [LED lightstrip](https://nanoleaf.me/en-US/products/essentials/lightstrips/). Note that existing Nanoleaf Essentials will not receive a Matter update.

Nanoleaf [first announced](https://www.reviewgeek.com/135176/nanoleaf-prepares-for-the-smart-home-future-with-new-bulbs-and-strips/) its Matter-enabled Essentials lighting in November of 2022. The original announcement included GU10 and BR30 bulbs, though these are now set to launch at a later date.

There isn’t much to explain about these new products. The Essentials A19 bulb ($19+) and Essentials Lightstrip ($50) feature 16 million color options, plus a range of color temperatures and support for Scenes and automations. The defining feature here is Matter and Thread support.

The Thread smart home standard allows for a speedy device setup, and notably, it improves the responsiveness and range of other Thread-enabled devices in your home. Matter builds on Thread with cross-device compatibility—if two smart home products support Matter, they’ll work together, regardless of their branding. (All the major smart home brands, including Google, Amazon, Apple, and Samsung, are committed to Matter.)

Of course, this functionality requires a Matter-compatible smart home hub and Thread Border Router. Google and Amazon are working on integrating this technology with their respective products, but Apple’s HomePod and Apple TV set-top box are already good to go.

Nanoleaf is reiterating a commitment that it made in January. The company promises to roll out Matter support for existing light panels and bars (Shapes, Elements, Canvas, Lines) by the end of 2023. (Nanoleaf was [a bit wishy-washy](https://www.reviewgeek.com/135455/nanoleaf-wont-commit-to-upgrading-its-products-for-matter/) about the Matter update when we asked about it in 2022. So, I’m relieved that the company is sticking with this commitment.)

OnePlus Will Let You Try a Phone for “100 Days No Regrets”

Devices that utilize Samsung Exynos modems may be an easy target for hackers. In a new report, Google’s Project Zero team identified [18 zero-day vulnerabilities](https://redirect.viglink.com/?key=14d03d76e0a6285761e58439513dfd19&u=https%3A%2F%2Fgoogleprojectzero.blogspot.com%2F2023%2F03%2Fmultiple-internet-to-baseband-remote-rce.html&cuid=xid:{xid}&___trxnet=vg) in recent Exynos modems. Google suggests disabling Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE on affected devices, though most users cannot disable these settings.

Only four of the vulnerabilities identified by Project Zero are of immediate concern. According to Project Zero, these vulnerabilities may enable internet-to-baseband remote code execution. While the details are a bit unclear, Project Zero claims that hackers can exploit these vulnerabilities using only a victim’s phone number. (The other 14 vulnerabilities require a “malicious mobile network operator or an attacker with local access to the device.”)

Project Zero first reported these vulnerabilities in late 2022. Google included a patch in the Pixel 7’s March update (which you should install if you haven’t already), but as Project Zero’s [Maddie Stone](https://twitter.com/maddiestone/status/1636469657136959488) notes, most devices are still unpatched.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to figure out all the devices that may be affected by this exploit. Project Zero put together a rudimentary list using public information, though I’m not sure that this is a complete list (I suspect that smartwatches with new Exynos cellular modems may be affected as well):

*   Mobile devices from Samsung, including those in the S22, M33, M13, M12, A71, A53, A33, A21s, A13, A12 and A04 series.
*   Mobile devices from Vivo, including those in the S16, S15, S6, X70, X60 and X30 series.
*   The Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series of devices from Google.
*   Any vehicles that use the Exynos Auto T5123 chipset.

According to [Samsung](https://shop-links.co/link/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsemiconductor.samsung.com%2Fsupport%2Fquality-support%2Fproduct-security-updates%2F&publisher_slug=reviewgeek&exclusive=1&u1=148499&article_name=Google+Warns+of+%26%238220%3BSevere+Vulnerability%26%238221%3B+on+Pixel+and+Samsung+Galaxy+Devices&article_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reviewgeek.com%2F148499%2Fgoogle-warns-of-severe-vulnerability-on-pixel-and-samsung-galaxy-devices%2F), the Exynos Modem 5123, Exynos Modem 5300, Exynos 980, Exynos 1080, and Exynos Auto T5123 are affected by these vulnerabilities.

Project Zero usually publishes detailed information on zero-day exploits. But due to the severity of these vulnerabilities, it’s holding back some information. For what it’s worth, only one of the four major vulnerabilities ([CVE-2023-24033](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-24033)) has been assigned a CVE.

In its blog post, Project Zero suggests that users disable Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE on affected devices (open Settings, go to “Network and Internet,” and select “SIM”). Disabling these settings will prevent phone calls from being made or received on most carrier networks. And, unfortunately, some carriers don’t let you alter these settings.

My advice is to install the latest update available to your phone. Depending on when you read this article, the March Android patch may be available to you (thereby resolving this issue). If you’re a high-risk target, you may want to disable Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE, though this isn’t a realistic option for most users.

Google Warns of “Severe Vulnerability” on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy Devices

Just one day after a [Pixel 7a leak](https://www.reviewgeek.com/148089/pixel-7a-specs-and-photos-leak-ahead-of-release/), we’re getting our first look at the Pixel 8 Pro. New renders from [@OnLeaks and _Smartprix_](https://www.smartprix.com/bytes/exclusive-pixel-8-pro-first-look/) show some interesting changes in Google’s upcoming flagship, including a mysterious new sensor on the camera bar.

At a glance, the Pixel 8 Pro looks identical to its predecessor. But it appears to use a flat display, and its three rear cameras are now contained in a single black blob (as opposed to two separate blobs). The bezels of this device also look _very_ thin, which may explain why the Pixel 8 Pro ditches a curved display.

And, of course, there’s that curious sensor under the camera’s flash. My gut tells me that this is a [depth sensor](https://www.howtogeek.com/836290/what-is-a-depth-camera-on-a-phone/), which could enhance photography (and especially portrait mode, which aims to create a sense of depth). That said, it could also be a macro camera, a black-and-white camera sensor, or a fancy [LiDAR sensor](https://www.howtogeek.com/695823/what-is-lidar-and-how-will-it-work-on-the-iphone/).

To be clear, these renders are _based on_ leaked information—they aren’t official images. This is common practice among leakers, as it helps protect sources. Historically speaking, @OnLeaks’ renders are usually accurate, though we should approach this leak with a bit of skepticism. It’s a very early leak, after all.

The Pixel 8 Pro is expected to launch in October of 2023. Google may also launch the [Pixel Fold](https://www.reviewgeek.com/102618/google-pixel-fold/) this year, though we’re not sure when.

Google’s Pixel 8 Pro Could Gain a Curious New Sensor



Arriving in May of 2023, the Lenovo ThinkStation PX, P7, and P5 offer a ridiculous amount of power in an Aston Martin-designed chassis. These machines feature the latest Intel Xeon processors and NVIDIA RTX Ada Lovelace GPUs—when I say that they’re overpowered, I really mean it.

The ThinkStation PX is the flagship of this trio. It features a “dual-everything” design, with two Intel Xeon 4th Scaleable CPUs (up to 60 cores per CPU), four dual-slot NVIDIA RTX 600 Ada GPUs (48GB VRAM each), up to 2TB of DDR5 RAM, a maximum 60TB of storage (using nine drives), and an optional 1850W redundant power supply.

Clearly, this is an industrial-class machine. I should note that the ThinkStation PX is rack-mountable and features a large selection of ports on its rear, including a legacy serial port.

Lenovo’s ThinkStation P7 is a bit more modest (but still overkill). It uses an Intel Xeon CPU (up to 56 cores) and can use three RTX 6000 Ada GPUs. Memory caps out at a maximum of 1TB, and you can reach a maximum 56TB of storage with seven drives. Lenovo also downgrades the PSU here, giving you the option of 1000W or 1400W.

Finally, there’s the ThinKStation P5. In its maximum configuration, this PC offers an Intel Xeon CPU (up to 24 cores), dual RTX 6000 Ada GPUs, up to 512GB DDR5 RAM, and 48TB of storage with six drives. The power supply gets another downgrade in this machine—you can choose between 750W or 1000W.

The average person will never need these super-powered ThinkStations. Still, they’re sure to be popular in industries that rely on demanding software. Unfortunately, pricing is unknown, but these ThinkStations launch in May of 2023.
