Hardware prototyping consultant Ken Pillonel has added wires and a USB-C connector to a set of AirPods, bypassing the need for its charging case.  
  
Repair site _iFixit_ has given all versions of the AirPods and [AirPods Pro](https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/airpods-pro/) a score of [zero out of 10](https://www.macrumors.com/2022/09/28/airpods-pro-2-teardown/) for repairability. They are not designed to be serviced or repaired because no internal components can be accessed without damage to the device, making them a disposable item, especially since their three batteries degrade over time.  
  
Pillonel's latest tongue-in-cheek project to add wires to AirPods is designed to raise awareness about these repairability issues, encouraging consumers to think more about simply buying a non-consumable pair of wired earbuds rather than Apple's wireless offering.  

Last year, Pillonel undertook a similar project to highlight repairability issues with Apple's lightning connector by adding one [to a Samsung Galaxy A51](https://www.macrumors.com/2022/04/19/engineer-added-lightning-to-samsung-phone/). iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users will be able to customize the sensitivity of the solid-state buttons on their device, thanks to a new sensitivity toggle in Settings. That's according to details provided by a hitherto reliable source that [shared additional details on the _MacRumors_ forums](https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/capacitive-buttons-on-iphone-15-pro-models-use-a-new-micro-processor-to-manage-button-presses-and-enhanced-find-my-support-while-the-phone-is-off.2385131/post-32067217).  
  
Earlier this week, the same anonymous tipster revealed that the iPhone 15 Pro models will use a [new ultra-low energy chip](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/03/29/iphone-15-pro-low-energy-microprocessor/) allowing the new volume, power, and "Action" solid-state buttons to remain functional when the handset is powered off or out of battery.  
  
Some iPhone users immediately raised concerns about how the new capacitive buttons will work properly when a case is fitted or when gloves are worn. In response, the tipster has revealed that iOS 17 will include a new toggle in Settings that will enable users to customize the sensitivity of the buttons to accommodate these different usage scenarios.  
  
iPhone case makers typically receive design details about Apple's upcoming models ahead of launch that allows them to make tweaks for button positioning and other external changes. Combined with the new sensitivity setting, this should avoid any potential issues with the peculiarities of the new capacitive buttons, which will detect presses, holds, and respond to various levels of pressure via the use of a new Force Touch-style mechanism and Taptic Engine feedback.  
  
In line with previous rumors, solid-state capacitive buttons are expected to be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models, with the standard iPhone 15 models retaining the same traditional button mechanism as on the iPhone 14 series. The iPhone 15 Pro is also gaining a new [customizable Action button](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/03/29/iphone-15-pro-action-button-rumor/) in lieu of the mute switch, with a unified volume button replacing the separate up/down volume buttons.

iPhone 15 Pro Solid-State Button Sensitivity Can Be Customized to Cater for Cases and Gloves

Apple today [announced](https://www.apple.com/sg/newsroom/2023/03/apple-introduces-homepod-and-homepod-mini-in-singapore/) that the second-generation HomePod and the HomePod mini will be available to order in Singapore starting Thursday, March 30, with deliveries to customers and in-store availability set to begin Friday, April 6.  
  
The second-generation HomePod will be [available for $429](https://www.apple.com/sg/shop//buy-homepod/homepod) on Apple's online store in Singapore, while the HomePod mini [is priced at $139](https://www.apple.com/sg/shop//buy-homepod/homepod-mini).  
  
Apple had discontinued the full-size HomePod in 2021, but the company [introduced a second-generation model](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/01/18/apple-announces-new-homepod/) in January. The new HomePod features a similar design as the original smart speaker, with a larger backlit touch surface and a few other improvements. Despite having two fewer tweeters, reviews found the new HomePod [sounds virtually the same](https://www.macrumors.com/review/homepod/) as the original, but Siri still has shortcomings compared to other virtual assistants.  
  
The smaller HomePod mini was introduced in October 2020 and has not received any hardware changes since beyond new color options. The launch of the HomePod mini in Singapore next month likely rules out a second-generation model launching in the near future.

The iOS 16.4 update that was released today fleshes out the built-in order tracking function that's available in the Wallet app for purchases made using [Apple Pay](https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/apple-pay/).  
  

There's now a dedicated [Home Screen](https://www.macrumors.com/guide/home-screen/) widget for tracking orders placed with ‌Apple Pay‌, and an updated [Apple support document](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213326) clarifies that it is also possible to share order tracking options with others using the Share button.  
  
Orders can be sent using Messages, email, and other apps, allowing you to share tracking with friends and family.  
  
Apple added ‌Apple Pay‌ order tracking to the Wallet app with [iOS 16](https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/ios-16/), but it is limited to participating merchants.  
  
iOS 16.4 is available as of today on all devices capable of running ‌iOS 16‌.

The watchOS 9.4 update that came out today has a hidden feature that is designed to allow you to delete built-in apps directly from the Apple Watch. Apple did not mention this function in the release notes for the update, but [a support document](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211833) on deleting built-in apps from various devices has been updated.  
  

According to Apple, the following apps can be deleted from the Apple Watch if you are running watchOS 9.4 or later:

Prior to watchOS 9.4, you could remove an app from your Apple Watch by removing it from your [iPhone](https://www.macrumors.com/guide/iphone/), but the app needed to be deleted from both devices. With watchOS 9.4, you can delete an app like Activity or Maps on your Apple Watch, leaving it intact on the ‌iPhone‌.  
  
Apple warns that deleting built-in apps can affect core device functionality. If you delete the Heart Rate app, for example, the Apple Watch is not able to send high heart rate, low heart rate, irregular rhythm, and cardio fitness notifications.  
  
Apple has come under fire for requiring that its apps be installed on ‌iPhone‌, [iPad](https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/ipad/), and Apple Watch devices, so it has been implementing tools for deleting the apps over the last several years. iOS 14 in particular added support for deleting a wide variety of built-in apps, which is useful for those who prefer to use third-party alternatives.

According to a new [tweet](https://twitter.com/mingchikuo/status/1639113755836686336?s=20) by Apple industry analyst [Ming-Chi Kuo](https://www.macrumors.com/guide/ming-chi-kuo/), the proximity sensor on the ‌iPhone 15‌ series will be integrated inside the ‌Dynamic Island‌ area, instead of sitting below it.  

> In the iPhone 14 Pro, the proximity sensor is located under the display (outside the dynamic island). Conversely, in the iPhone 15 series, the proximity sensor is situated within the dynamic island, with almost no change to the Dynamic Island area.

The proximity sensor detects when the user holds the phone up to their ear and shuts off the screen. As Kuo says, the tweak is unlikely to result in any difference to the look or functionality of the ‌Dynamic Island‌, but it will mark a change in components, possibly instigated to reduce costs.  
  
Apple supplier Finisar will shift to providing Apple with 940nm wavelength proximity sensors, compared to 1380nm for the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 15 series will include support for faster charging speeds when used with MFi-certified USB-C chargers, including its own [20W Power Adapter](https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MHJA3AM/A/20w-usb-c-power-adapter?fnode=6da5b5d66b91bf6e98bb6dd686219bdda10552056c89ed8745788526ae5fcc16b8924eb35c94257ef4d56eb07425086ca160be8779a3ccac22b99bb1673e5b996a39f994f8d7cf9b5af6bfb3d2c053943e314697e4bebc772e9ff1876af1090a), according to the latest research note from Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.  
  
This year, Apple will transition the iPhone from Lightning to USB-C in order to comply with European regulations that require electronic devices to have non-proprietary, common charging methods.  
  
As part of the move, Apple is expected to restrict certain advantages of USB-C like faster charging and data speeds to work with MFi-certified cables and chargers only. As a result, Kuo believes Apple is anticipating a major increase in demand for its own USB-C 20W Power Adapter. In addition to the benefits of owning an Apple-certified charger, Kuo believes that another potential driving factor behind the strong replacement demand will be iPhone 15 customers' desire to own more than one USB-C charger to meet the need for more charging locations.  
  
Given these factors, Kuo says that shipments of Apple's USB-C 20W Power Adapter in 2023 are "expected to see a significant 30–40% YoY growth, amounting to 230–240 million units," with Apple supplier LY iTech standing out as the main beneficiary in terms of revenue contribution.  
  
Since being introduced in 2012, first-party and MFi-certified Lightning ports and connectors have contained a small integrated circuit that confirms the authenticity of the parts involved in the connection. Non-MFi-certified third-party charging cables do not feature this chip, often leading to "This accessory is not supported" warnings on connected Apple devices.  
  
[Rumors](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/02/10/apple-planning-to-limit-iphone-15-usb-c-port/) have [suggested](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/02/28/iphone-15-usb-c-accessories-limited-without-mfi/) that the replacement USB-C port on iPhone 15 models will continue to have a Lightning-like authentication chip, despite USB-C ports on Apple's iPads having no such chip. The concern from a user perspective is that Apple will use the MFi program to limit features like fast charging and high-speed data transfer to Apple and MFi-certified cables. Kuo's latest prediction appears to suggest the same.  
  
Kuo has [previously claimed](https://www.macrumors.com/2022/11/16/iphone-15-high-speed-data-transfer/) that the USB-C port on the ‌iPhone 15‌ and ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus will remain limited to Lightning/USB 2.0 speeds, while faster transfer speeds will be exclusive to the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max models.

Apple is testing generative AI concepts that could one day be destined for [Siri](https://www.macrumors.com/guide/siri/), despite fundamental issues with the way the virtual assistant is built, the [_New York Times_](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/15/technology/siri-alexa-google-assistant-ai-race.html) reports.  
  
Employees were apparently briefed on Apple's large language model and other AI tools at the company's [annual AI summit](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/02/07/apple-ai-summit-in-person-event/) last month. Apple engineers, including members of the ‌Siri‌ team, have reportedly been testing language-generation concepts "every week" in response to the rise of chatbots like ChatGPT.  
  
These next-generation AI technologies have highlighted how ‌Siri‌, Alexa, and other voice assistants have squandered their lead in the AI race, the report explains. ‌Siri‌, in particular, has faced multiple roadblocks to meaningful improvements. Speaking to the _New York Times_, former Apple engineer John Burkey, who worked on ‌Siri‌ and was made responsible for improving it in 2014, explained that the voice assistant is built on "clunky code that took weeks to update with basic features."  
  
Its "cumbersome design" made it very difficult for engineers to add new features. For example, ‌Siri‌'s database contains a large list of phrases in almost two dozen languages, making it "one big snowball." If someone wanted to add a word to ‌Siri‌'s database, Burkey added, "it goes in one big pile."  
  
This means that simple updates like adding new phrases to the data set requires rebuilding the entire ‌Siri‌ database, which could take up to six weeks. Adding more complicated features like new search tools could take up to a whole year.  
  
As a result, there was no path for ‌Siri‌ to become a "creative assistant" like ChatGPT, Burkey believes. Earlier this week, OpenAI unveiled GPT-4, its next-generation AI engine, enabling even more advanced responses from ChatGPT.  
  
Last week, [_DigiTimes_ reported](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/03/08/apple-to-reexamine-ai-development/) that the growing interest in generative AI catalyzed by ChatGPT has motivated a re-evaluation of how the technology is developed at major companies like Apple, Meta, and Amazon. Tianma apparently will be a beneficiary of Apple's "revamped smart home strategy," becoming the sole supplier of the redesigned ‌HomePod‌'s display. If its participation in manufacturing the new ‌HomePod‌ goes well, Tianma may be entrusted to supply [iPad](https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/ipad/) panels in the future.

Samsung plans to rival Apple silicon by developing its own custom processors for future smartphones and personal computers in an effort to develop more advanced chips.  
  
According to _[Business Korea](http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=110460)_, Samsung has already formed an internal team dedicated to CPU core development and has recruited Rahul Tuli, a former AMD developer, to lead the group.  
  
Samsung has traditionally relied on British chip company Arm for its Exynos advanced processors, but developing the chips in-house would allow it to take full control of the design and optimization process, similar to Apple's transition away from Intel.  
  
The first application processor (AP) is said to be dubbed Galaxy Chip, and could be available in 2025. However, this chip will likely have a CPU based on Arm technology, since Samsung has only just initiated development of its own CPU core.  
  
"Samsung Electronics will be able to boost completion level of its Galaxy Chip if it successfully develops a CPU core," Korean outlet _[Pulse News](https://pulsenews.co.kr/view.php?year=2023&no=176790)_ quoted an unnamed industry official as saying. "It will be able to load its own CPU in 2027 if development is carried out as planned."  
  
This isn't the first time that Samsung has developed its own CPU. The company has been building its own development team and investing in technology since the early 2010s to build its own design capabilities.  
  
However, Samsung folded the project because its CPU cores were deemed inferior to those of competitors such as Qualcomm in terms of power efficiency, heat generation, and multi-core efficiency. In 2019, the company officially scrapped the project and laid off more than 300 developers at the Samsung Austin Research Center (SARC).  
  
Since 2020, Apple has been working to transition away from Intel chips, instead using its own [Apple silicon](https://www.macrumors.com/guide/apple-silicon/) chips. Apple's custom chips are Arm-based and are similar to the A-series chips used in iPhones and iPads, and Apple unveiled the first Apple silicon Macs in November 2020.  
  
Apple's chips bring a whole new level of performance with more powerful Macs that are also more energy-efficient. With Apple designing its own chips for iOS devices and Macs, there is a common architecture across all Apple product lines, which also makes it easier for developers to write and optimize software that runs on all Apple products.  
  
Apple has almost completed its transition away from Intel to Apple silicon, with one Intel Mac computer still waiting to be updated: The Mac Pro. Apple is said to be [testing a new Mac Pro with Apple silicon](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/01/11/new-mac-pro-macos-13-3/), with a view to releasing it in the summer.

The images are said to be based on CAD drawings of the devices that were provided to Apple's supply chain for device manufacturing, and they follow leaks that we've previously seen for both the [standard iPhone 15](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/02/22/iphone-15-images/) and the [iPhone 15 Pro](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/02/16/iphone-15-pro-usb-c-port/).  

Like the ‌iPhone 15‌, the ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus will feature a [Dynamic Island](https://www.macrumors.com/guide/dynamic-island/) instead of a notch, with Apple bringing the ‌Dynamic Island‌ design to the entire [iPhone](https://www.macrumors.com/guide/iphone/) lineup in 2023. It will also include a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port, another change that Apple is making to all ‌iPhone 15‌ devices.

Sony will replace Lumentum and WIN Semi as the exclusive supplier of LiDAR Scanner components for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to the latest information shared by reputable Apple analyst [Ming-Chi Kuo](https://www.macrumors.com/guide/ming-chi-kuo/).  
  
In a [series of tweets](https://twitter.com/mingchikuo/status/1629155411382370307?s=20) today, Kuo said Sony's time-of-flight VCSELs have lower power consumption than those from Apple's existing suppliers. This would result in the LiDAR Scanner being more power efficient on the iPhone 15 Pro models, which Kuo said could either contribute to longer battery life or allow for the LiDAR Scanner to offer improved performance at the same level of power consumption as on existing iPhones.  
  
Kuo said the improved LiDAR Scanner could benefit camera features, like Night mode and autofocus, as well as augmented reality uses. First introduced on iPhone 12 Pro models in 2020, the LiDAR Scanner can measure light distance and capture depth information, and the hardware is expected to remain exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro models.

Apple's long-rumored AR/VR headset has yet to be announced, but [_Nikkei Asia_](https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Supply-Chain/Apple-taps-China-s-Luxshare-to-develop-augmented-reality-device) today reported that the company's manufacturing partner Foxconn is already developing a cheaper second-generation version of the headset.  
  
The report cites an unnamed "executive with knowledge of the development" who claims that Apple's first headset will be "extremely expensive," with industry estimates ranging from $3,000 to $5,000. The source believes Apple's second-generation headset will have a more affordable price within the territory of "a high-end Mac computer."  
  
From the report:

> Foxconn is also helping with the AR project, four people told Nikkei Asia. The longtime iPhone assembler will work on parallel development of a cheaper second-generation AR device, four sources said. Foxconn's focus will be on automating mass production and improving production performance to help Apple lower overall costs, according to two people familiar with the plans.

Apple's plans to release a cheaper version of its AR/VR headset were [first reported last month](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/01/17/apple-cheaper-ar-vr-headset/) by _The Information_'s Wayne Ma and _Bloomberg_'s Mark Gurman. The headset would supposedly use more affordable components, such as lower-resolution lenses.

Foxconn Reportedly Working on Apple's Cheaper Second-Generation Headset

Uber today [announced](https://www.uber.com/newsroom/app-redesign/) it is updating its iPhone app with Live Activities support in over 1,200 cities around the world following several months of testing. The new version of the app will be available on the App Store starting this morning.  
  
Live Activities is an iOS 16 feature that allows iPhone users to stay on top of real-time events right on the Lock Screen on all iPhones and in the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The feature will make it easier for iPhone users to track the live progress of an Uber ride at a glance without opening the app, including the latest ETA, the trip status, and the vehicle's description and license plate number.  
  
Apple announced that Uber would support Live Activities back at WWDC 2022, and the feature has [been in testing](https://www.macrumors.com/2022/12/05/uber-preparing-live-activities-support/) in select countries since late last year. With the latest update to the Uber app, the feature is available around the world.

Uber is adding CarPlay support to its Driver app, allowing the iPhone app to be accessed from a vehicle's dashboard display, according to [_TechCrunch_](https://techcrunch.com/2023/02/09/uber-driver-app-apple-carplay-integration/). The report says CarPlay integration should be available to all Uber drivers in the U.S. by the end of the month.  
  
As on the iPhone, the CarPlay version of the app allows Uber drivers to view a map with surge pricing areas, navigate with turn-by-turn directions, view and accept trips, add rides to their queue, view if their status is set to online or offline, and more.  
  
Uber competitor Lyft also offers CarPlay support for its Driver app.
